Preventative Curriculum
Personal Development is central to the curriculum at Beckfoot Nessfield Primary School and develops children’s abilities to safeguard themselves personally, emotionally, physically and as members of a diverse and culturally varied society. The planned curriculum is designed to help them to consider and deal with the moral, social, safety and health-related issues that may arise in their lives and in society in order to keep themselves safe and enable them to flourish. It aims to develop the knowledge, risk-management skills and understanding they need to live confident, healthy, independent lives as individuals, parents, workers and members of society, managing their relationships with others in a safe and secure way.
We plan to constantly challenge children to think deeply about safeguarding matters and their own personal physical and mental wellbeing. We value pupils’ questions and give them space for their own thoughts, ideas and concerns. There are opportunities across the curriculum to explore values, personal rights, responsibilities and equal opportunities that develop moral concepts that impact positively on safeguarding, promote British values and prevent radicalisation and extremism.
The school’s PSHE curriculum covers both discrete taught sessions and the broader school curriculum and assemblies which aim to provide constant and meaningful opportunities for personal, social, moral and cultural development and reflection, underpinned by the school’s No Outsiders ethos – all are welcome. Staff and children are quick to challenge stereotypes and the use of derogatory language in lessons and around school. Our school reflects the diversity of pupils’ experiences and provides pupils with a comprehensive understanding of people and communities beyond their immediate experience including the role of women in society and different family groups including same sex couples. Within the RE curriculum there are planned opportunities to promote all forms of equality and foster greater understanding of and respect for people off all faiths (and those with no faith). Children are taught key facts and knowledge about different religions, beliefs and practises in order that they can make an informed choice about them and will also be able to challenge stereotypical preconceived negative views about religion. The school places a specific focus on celebrating and understanding the religions of the children within our school and the local community.
We recognise that a one size fits all approach may not be appropriate for all children, and a more personalised or contextualised approach for more vulnerable children and specific family cultural beliefs may be needed.
No Outsiders ethos – all are welcomeregardless of age, ability, race, religion, gender or sexual orientation |
