Maths at Beckfoot Nessfield
We teach maths every day from reception to Year 6 in two separate sessions: a maths lessons, and a maths meeting. Since 2022, we have been proud to be a Mathematics Mastery School and follow their programme in all year groups.
Our six-part lesson structure:

- Do now: Children have the opportunity to retrieve prior knowledge they have learnt from across the curriculum, especially number facts and timetables.
- New learning: The teacher introduces new learning and vocabulary using concrete resources and visuals, such as place value counters.
- Talk task: Children complete a talk-based activity with their partner to practice what they have been taught, they talk in full sentences using the correct technical language to embed the correct mathematical vocabulary.
- Develop learning: This mirrors the new learning part of the lesson but moves children’s learning on, allowing them to deeper their understanding.
- Independent task: Children practice their ‘develop learning’ by working independently and demonstrating what they have understood and learnt. The teacher will also check for any errors or misconceptions.
- Plenary: Children will reflect on their learning, the lesson will be summarised, and an assessment opportunity is used to plan future learning plans or address misconceptions.
Maths meetings
As well as the daily maths lessons, we also have maths meetings. These shorter sessions enable us to keep important aspects of maths at the forefront of the children’s minds through retrieval practice. Children revisit key facts often in songs or chants. These sessions are pacey and fun and enable the teacher to keep all aspects of the maths curriculum alive.
