Beckfoot Trust Covid update - January 2022

We are looking forward to welcoming staff and students back into school this week, and would like to share some reminders about Covid-19, and an update to guidance on face coverings in secondary schools.

Schools will open as planned and as communicated prior to the Christmas break.

Illness and Isolation

Students should attend school unless they have had a positive test (on a Lateral Flow Device (LFD) or are displaying one of the main covid-19 symptoms.

  • Fever
  • A new, continuous cough
  • A loss/change in sense of smell or taste

In these cases the student should isolate at home, and arrange to get a PCR test.

In a recent change to guidance, isolation can end after 7 days following 2 negative LFD tests taken 24 hours apart. The first LFD test should not be taken before the sixth day.  The flow chart below shows how this works.

If there is a case in your household, or a child has been identified as a contact, those aged 5 and over are strongly advised to take daily lateral flow tests for 7 days, but children and young people are still able to attend school providing they do not display symptoms.  Under 5's are exempt from isolation and do not need to take part in daily testing.

Secondary school aged pupils have been offered a lateral flow test at school in the first few days of term and your school will have communicated the details of this to you.  They will then be provided with a pack of lateral flow tests to use twice weekly at home.  Results of these should continue to be reported via your schools reporting route and via the government portal.

Face Coverings

The advice on face coverings for secondary school students was updated on Sunday 2nd January by the Department for Education.  It now recommends that face coverings are worn in classrooms where pupils in year 7 and above are educated.  This is in addition to the existing recommendation that face coverings are worn in corridors and communal areas.  The advice on face coverings in classrooms will be in place until Wednesday 26 January, at which point it will be reviewed.
