We are really excited to welcome you to Year 5 and Poplar class!
Mrs Wolstencroft and Miss Baxter are the teachers in Poplar. Mrs Randell and Miss Howlett support the class.
What is Year 5 all about?
Independence!!! Now you are in Upper Key Stage 2, we try to encourage you to think for yourself as much as possible. This includes being responsible for your own reading records and reading books, working without explicitly adult direction in a morning and taking responsibility to help others without being asked.
We expect you to set a positive example to other children around school and be a role model with your behaviour, uniform and with how you treat others.
What do will be learning?
We have some AMAZING Learning Challenge topics throughout the year. These include learning about the Ancient Egyptians, Space and a local heritage study about the Bronte sisters.
We also read some fantastic books in English by Michael Morpurgo and Anthony Horowitz.
We do maths daily which always involves a timed maths blast, problem solving activities and reasoning problems which will be linked to the objective you are learning in class that day.
Do I get homework?
We don’t give you any ‘formal’ homework but we do expect you to do some independent learning at home.
Reading: You will be given your own reading book and home reading record. In Year 5, we expect you to read for 20 minutes a night and then write in your own reading record. This will then be checked by and adult in school.
Spelling: You will all be given your own Spelling Shed log in. Each week your teacher will set you assignments to complete on the app at home. These assignments will be linked to the spelling rule taught in class that week.
By the end of Year 6 we expect you to know 1-12 times tables off by heart. You will have been given your own Times Table Rockstars (TT Rockstars) so you can practise these at home.
We love doing PE in Year 5 and expect everyone to join in each week.
Our PE days are Tuesday and Thursday. When it is PE day please come to school in your full PE kit (navy jogging bottoms or shorts, white t-shirt, navy sweatshirt).
If you do not have the correct PE kit then you will be unable to take part and will be asked to watch the lesson instead.
